One of the benefits of attending a research university is that professors are engaged in cutting-edge research. By working with professors, you can develop your own research project that dovetails with a larger research program.
Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)
The U of M's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides a stipend to undergraduates for special research, scholarly, or creative projects done with a faculty member. You must apply and be accepted into the UROP program. To apply, you'll develop your own research proposal, usually in partnership or with the permission of a faculty member. Applications are accepted twice a year. They're judged on the quality of the proposed project, and on the educational benefit to the student. Directed Study and Directed Research Courses
You can earn credit by working or doing research under a faculty member’s guidance. Before signing up for APEC 3993 (Directed Study in Applied Economics) or APEC 3994 (Directed Research in Applied Economics), speak with your advisor to find out how the project credits will fit into your program of study, how to find a faculty member who is willing to serve as your mentor in the project, and how to register for the course.
