Biography

Havy Nguyen is a graduate student in the Master of Science in Applied Economics program at the University of Minnesota. Her academic work centers on macroeconomics, with research interests in exchange rate regimes, inflation, GDP growth, international trade, and economic development across emerging economies. She also engages with applied microeconomic topics, including commodity marketing, education policy analysis, gender economics, and sustainability within bio-based and renewable energy systems.

She applies econometric techniques using Microsoft Excel, SAS, R, and SQL to analyze large datasets, including those with over 100,000 observations. Her data-driven research spans the evaluation of fiscal and monetary policy impacts, cost analysis in agricultural systems, crime data analysis, and healthcare data management.

In the Department of Applied Economics, Havy has served as a teaching assistant for four years, with three of those years focused on an Excel-based economic analysis course, followed by her current role supporting undergraduate microeconomics. Drawing from her experience in the University’s Leadership Minor, she served as a student representative on the Applied Economics Undergraduate Committee (2022–2024) and has been a board member of Women in APEC since 2024. Through her involvement, she supports the academic community by mentoring undergraduates and organizing programs that celebrate women’s achievements within the discipline.

Beyond her academic and professional commitments, Havy is deeply engaged in educational equity as a volunteer with Breakthrough Twin Cities, a nonprofit that supports students from underserved communities. She is also a classically trained pianist with over 12 years of experience. A former scholar in the MacPhail Center for Music’s Crescendo Piano Program, she now explores jazz and composition.
