B.S. in Applied Economics with a Leadership Minor, University of Minnesota – Twin Cities
Biography
Havy Nguyen is a graduate student in the Master of Science in Applied Economics program at the University of Minnesota. Her academic work centers on macroeconomics, with research interests in autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models for commodity market forecasting, international trade, and economic development. She applies advanced econometric methods in SAS, Microsoft Excel, R, and SQL to analyze high-volume datasets. She studies the integration of ARIMA frameworks into international commodity markets, using historical price data to establish counterfactual baselines and identify structural breaks, volatility, and recovery dynamics.
Havy practices hedging strategies in commodity markets, using futures and options to manage price risk. Her past research includes cost analysis in agricultural systems, evaluating the impacts of fiscal and monetary policy, exchange rate regimes, crime pattern analysis, and healthcare data management. She also engages in education policy analysis, gender economics, and sustainability within bio-based and renewable energy systems.
In the Department of Applied Economics, Havy has served as a teaching assistant for four years, including three years supporting an Excel-based economic analysis course and her current role assisting undergraduate microeconomics. Drawing on her experience in the University’s Leadership Minor, she served as a student representative on the Applied Economics Undergraduate Committee (2022–2024) and has been a board member of Women in APEC since 2024. Through these roles, she supports the academic community by mentoring undergraduates and organizing programs that celebrate women’s achievements in the discipline.
Beyond her academic and professional commitments, Havy is deeply engaged in educational equity as a volunteer with Breakthrough Twin Cities, a nonprofit supporting students from underserved communities. A former scholar in the MacPhail Center for Music’s Crescendo Piano Program, she continues to build on her 17 years of experience in the performing arts as a classically trained pianist, jazz violinist, and composer.
