Graduate fellowships help ensure the continuing strength of our graduate program.
The department currently provides graduate fellowships through three endowed funds, and has another fund with pledges to reach the $25,000 level. Donations to any of these funds will add to the principal from which annual returns are matched.
- The CHS Graduate Fellowship was established in 2007 through generous gifts from the CHS Foundation - the major giving entity of CHS Inc., a diversified energy, grains, and foods Fortune 500 company committed to providing the essential resources that enrich lives. This fellowship provides support for a graduate student studying digital information systems, web-based delivery and decision-making tools, farm management, or disciplines applicable to cooperatives and agribusiness.
- The Sam Chung Hsieh and Alice Yen-Hee Hsieh Graduate Fellowship Fund was established in 2006 through gifts from the children of the late Sam Chung Hsieh. Dr. Hsieh received his PhD in agricultural economics from the University of Minnesota in 1957. In 1990, he received the University of Minnesota Alumni Association's Outstanding Achievement Award and the department's Outstanding Alumni Award.
- The Mary A. and Robert B. Litterman Endowed Fellowship was established in 2001 with a generous gift from the Littermans. Dr. Mary A. Litterman earned her BS and PhD in agricultural economics, and Dr. Robert B. Litterman received his PhD in economics, both from the University of Minnesota. Their gift acknowledges the excellence of the Department of Applied Economics.
- The Willis L. and Dorothy L. Peterson Graduate Fellowship was established in 2006 through generous contributions from Dorothy Peterson. This fellowship commemorates the life of Willis Peterson, who served as a faculty member in the Department of Applied Economics from 1965 until his death in 1999, and honors his wife, Dorothy.
- The Jean Kinsey Graduate Fellowship was established in 2014 through the gifts of Applied Economics Emeritus Professor Jean Kinsey. This fellowship is to build a sustainable legacy for funding graduate students who are dedicated to conducting thesis or dissertation research on the economics of consumer behavior and/or food consumption/marketing/demand/health relationships.
